Job description: ERM is seeking a Construction Safety Manager to join our growing Operational Performance & Assurance technical team in Germany.

The overarching goal for this position and service is to assist our clients in keeping construction sites incident free by identifying safety related issues and risks and working with the project leadership team to design solutions to mitigate the exposure to those risks.

The manager will provide a vital support service for construction crews including clients and contractor’s safety resources, who focus on completing jobs and delivering quality projects complying locally, nationally, and international best practices.

Role responsibility

  • Assist in developing process, structure, design requirements and tools covering EHS aspects of capital projects from early concept and planning through design review, with key emphasis on construction and commissioning (“stage gates”)
  • Preview projects and project sites before work begins to determine safety related risks
  • Communicate with contractors and customer working onsite to establish their resources, safety work plan, monitoring and emergency response capacities
  • Lead, manage performance, retain, inspire and mentor personnel for overall success of the technical delivery team during overall construction
  • Visit or work from active project sites to assess ongoing work conditions to ensure compliance
  • Work with project management teams and field workers to develop and implement solutions to safety related issues on project sites
  • Maintaining safety related paperwork including client’s or legal requirements
  • Maintaining safety training certifications including training company employees on safe work practices
  • Disciplining employees and subcontractors who fail to comply with minimum safety standards
  • Develop a working understanding of ERM’s other consulting service areas and actively support cross-selling these services to existing clients
  • Support the general growth and development of ERM’s international Operational Performance technical community

Skill/experience requirement

  • BSc/MSc in safety, engineering, or related science degree
  • Construction safety related diploma or certification or extensive prior experience of working in active construction site in similar or higher capacity
  • Experience in this capacity in Pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical is a plus
  • Medically fit-to-work in high hazard work place such as construction and commissioning
  • Knowledge of local and international standards and regulations ( OSHA/ EU OHS) pertaining to pharmaceutical or chemical sector in general
  • Significant experience in following competencies: permit to work (PTW) process ; job based risk assessments , radiation ; read drawings, rendering, P&ID ; PHA and QRA
  • Experience with emergency response (especially medical and fire) with minimum Class I First Aid training and capability to lead an emergency response team
  • Experience with installation of critical safety control aspects of HVAC and local exhaust ventilation systems, refrigeration systems, electrical systems, lasers, and fire and life safety systems
  • Ability to access heights via ladders or scaffolding
  • Experience with managing hazard work activities during construction such as hot work, lifting and rigging, temporary electrical assets, excavation and trenching, sub surface clearance, traffic management
  • Experience with work supervision with heavy construction vehicles, overhead cranes ( stationary / mobile), electrical sub- stations, radiation sources and hazardous chemicals
  • Good communications skills – the ability to communicate effectively both in the written and spoken word.
  • Ability to listen – the ability to listen well and take in feedback from the employee perspective without passing judgment
  • Good record keeping abilities –ability to maintain good records of all safety related activities
  • Be passionate about EHS performance improvement and have substantial experience developing and delivering world-class EHS program solutions
  • Understands human factor aspects in consequence analysis for risk mitigation and incident investigations and for driving positive safety culture
  • Familiarity in leadership engagements and driving campaigns aiming for Incident Free/Zero Harm/ Goal Zero or similar safety aspirations in construction sites
  • Recognize technical expertise by and established reputation in the local marketplace. ( e.g qualified Se-Ge-re officer as in case of Germany)
