Call open for applications for a research grant within the framework of project “Cat4GTL – Continous Catalytic reactor for the Gas-to-Liquid process using NETmix technology”, reference POCI-01-0247-FEDER-069953, financed by European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (COMPETE 2020) and Portugal 2020, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Chemical Engineering

Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following two requirements may apply for this grant:

Requirement 1:

– Be a student enrolled in a doctoral program in the area of Chemical and Biological Enginering, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.

or

– To be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.

Note: In the case of masters who are enrolled in non-academic degree courses, the scholarship can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with this scholarship contract, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of two years in that typology of the scholarship, followed or interpolated.

Requirement 2:

  • Hold a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related areas.

If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract.

Activity Outline: The work plan aims at the development of simulation frameworks integrating Aspen Plus with other software tools, such as Aspen Energy Analyzer, Aspen Plus Economic Analyzer and User developed models (implementing Python and its packages) for several real scenarios of Gas-to-Liquid processes

Legislation and regulations: Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow) and Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in force ( ) and Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto.

Work place: The work will be developed at LEPABE, Department of Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Fernando Gomes Martins.

Grant duration: Initial duration of 12 months, with the predicted starting date in September 2021, on an exclusive basis eventually renewable but never exceeding the project duration.

According to article 6 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., in case of being selected student enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, the scholarship will not be renewed.

Stipend: The grant stipend varies from 1,104.64 euros according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country ( ) and 1,354.64 euros depending on the profile and previous experience of the candidate within the project area. In the case the amount exceeds 1,104.64 euros, the difference will be supported by FEUP own funds, not from project funds.

The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection procedure:

Candidates will be selected through a curriculum evaluation followed by an interview.

The curriculum evaluation will focus on the candidate’s merit, in which the following factors will be considered:

a) Education: Master in Chemical Engineering – 5 points; Master degree in related areas – 3 points; other Master degree in other areas – 0 points.

b) Master’s final average: up to 13/20 – 1 point, 14/20 – 3 points; equal to or greater than 15/20 ​​- 5 points

This classification is determined as follows.

  • In the case of an Integrated Masters: Integrated Masters classification.
  • In the case of an n-year Bachelor’s Degree + 2-year Master’s Degree: n/(n + 2) x Degree Rating + 2/(n + 2) x Master’s Rating.

c) Research experience: in the project area – up to 5 points; in areas related to the project – up to 3 points; outside the project area – 1 point.

Candidates who obtain a score equal to or greater than 13 points in the curriculum evaluation will be accepted for the interview. During the interview, topics related to the work plan will be discussed and less clear points in the candidate’s CV will be clarified. The interview will have a maximum score of 5 points.

Candidates will be graded on a scale of 1 to 20 points. If the minimum score of 16 points is not achieved by any of the candidates, the scholarship will not be awarded.
