Postdoctoral Position in Electrochemistry/Analytical Chemistry “The development of an electrochemical depolymerisation process of lignin and generation of extracts containing high value molecules” (M/F)

Job title: Postdoctoral Position in Electrochemistry/Analytical Chemistry “The development of an electrochemical depolymerisation process of lignin and generation of extracts containing high value molecules” (M/F)

Company:

Location: Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin

Job Description: Offer DescriptionThe position is funded by an ANR grant for the “Assembly of green PROcesses for optimal biomass Valorization” (APPROV(E)) project, which aims at the development of a lab-scale Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES)-based biorefinery. APROV(E) will cover all the biorefinery steps from lignocellulosic biomass fractionation with DES until lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose streams, and valorization of lignin via electrochemical depolymerisation.
The selected candidate will work on the lignin electrochemical depolymerisation part of the project. The sources and nature of lignin as well as the experimental conditions used during the electrochemical depolymerisation play an important role on the structure and the amount of products obtained. These parameters will be optimized and the depolymerisation products will be characterized by several techniques such as GC-MS, SEC, cyclic voltammetry or UV-Vis spectroscopy to determine their structure and antioxidant activity [1,2]. Recovery of the desired depolymerized products is crucial and various techniques will be tested for this purpose, such as classical liquid-liquid extraction carried out after the electrolysis step or in situ extraction via emulsion techniques that were shown to limit overoxidation of the desired products [3, 4].

  • Develop and optimize an effective electrochemical depolymerization process on a model lignin in DES
  • Apply the electrochemical depolymerization process to the lignins produced by biomass fractionation
  • Identify and quantify the products of depolymerization with analytical techniques (GC-MS, SEC, cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectroscopy)

The Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert CURIEN (IPHC), a joint research unit under the joint supervision of CNRS and the University of Strasbourg (UMR7178), is a multidisciplinary laboratory where research teams from different scientific cultures (ecology, physiology and ethology, chemistry and subatomic physics) develop very high level programs based on scientific instrumentation. The IPHC is structured into 4 departments and has a total staff of 393 staff including 257 permanent staff (ie 119 researchers and teachers / researchers and 138 engineers and technicians), 46 staff on fixed-term contracts and 102 doctoral students.
The proposed post-doctoral program will be realized in the Reconnaissance et Procédés de Séparation Moléculaire (RePSeM) team belonging to the Department of Analytical Sciences. The RePSeM team is made up of 11 teacher-researchers, 11 students (Masters and doctoral students), and 3 technical and administrative staff. The project in question is common to the team, all of the teacher-researchers are involved in different working groups depending on their specialty. The recruited candidate will be working under the direct supervision of Doctor Jérémy Brandel and Professor Véronique Hubscher, coordinators of the work package in charge of the Electrochemical depolymerization of lignin.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Chemistry Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Physics Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Chemistry Years of Research Experience NoneResearch Field Physics Years of Research Experience NoneAdditional InformationEligibility criteria
