Working and living in Italy

General Information Blue Card Italy

The EU Blue Card is a special residence permit issued to highly qualified foreign workers, provided that they have a job contract or a binding job offer and are the holders of a residence permit for work reasons. Highly-skilled workers fall outside the quota system.

Procedure for Blue Card Italy

Your employer must present a request, or a communication (in case the employer signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry), proposing a contract to the Single Desk for Immigration in the Prefettura of the right province.

When the employer’s proposal is accepted, the Single Desk For Immigration will communicate the decision to the Italian embassy in your country of origin and you will be issued a visa to enter Italy. The foreigner does not need an entry visa if he/she is legally staying in the country or is the holder of an EU Blue Card issued by another Member State where he has resided legally for at least 18 months.

The migrant must apply for a residence permit at the Single Desk for Immigration in the Prefettura of the competent province within eight days of arriving in Italy. Your work authorisation corresponds to the contract of work-related residence and will last for the corresponding period of time:

  • Contract duration plus three months.
  • If you have an unlimited contract, the permit is issued for two years.

To work in Italy as a highly-skilled worker:

  • your employer must present a proposal for a residence contract to the One-Stop-Shop for Immigration.
  • you must get a visa, before you enter Italy;
  • you must apply for a residence permit within eight days of entering Italy.

Highly-skilled workers fall outside the quota system.
